Grainface is the laptop ensemble of the Institute for musicology and musicinformatics (Musikwissenschaft und Musikinformatik) of the University of Music karlsruhe. grainface uses commercial and non-commercial software to create rhythmic sound collages combined with their own ideas and interpretations. video [1][2]

the unstoppable hum

installation by sabrina raaf, 2000. Steel, Rubber, Aluminum, Glass, Custom Electronics.

Raaf’s “machines’ behaviors are based in generative algorithms. They rely on networks, reflexivity, and the interplay of randomness and pattern to initiate a genuine engagement with their environment and with visitors. Raaf views such artistic innovations as tools for creating new experiential frameworks that question the very nature (or location) of authorship.”

nicolai is an artist working in the transitional area of art and science. his works are located in the areas of visual art, electronic music, installations, performances, and many more. his investigations into environments we inhabit or are surounded by are translated into natural and organic expressions as a continous process or the result of such. besides being carsten nicolai, he performs under the name alva noto and is founding member of raster-noton a platform to network the overlapping borders of pop, art, and science.
